FENNELL NAMED OCAA MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

OSHAWA, Ont. - Matt Fennell of Mohawk College was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men's basketball player of the year in a ceremony held in Oshawa, Ont., on Friday morning as part of the 2015 belairdirect OCAA Men's Basketball Championship.

The fifth-year guard was the west regional scoring champion averaging 28.4 points per game. He shot 54.8 percent from the field, and 46.3 beyond the three-point arc. Fennell (London, Ont.) scored 511 points, one of only two players to surpass 500 this season. Fennell is a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian for the second time in his career, and headlines the OCAA west region first-team all-stars.

Joining Fennell as an all-Canadian is Georgian College's Tequilan Zwarych (Whitby, Ont.). The second-year forward earned a double-double in 17 of 20 regular season games, averaging 20.0 points and a league-best 13.9 rebounds per game. Zwarych is also an OCAA east region first-team all-star.

Jaz Bains (United Kingston) of St. Lawrence College (Kingston, Ont.) is the OCAA east region and overall rookie of the year. Bains averaged 19.9 points per game while being among the league leaders in assists with 77. Bains was also named an east region second-team all-star and headlines the OCAA all-rookie team.

Keeping the top rookie awards strictly international, Delroy Grandison (Jamaica) of Niagara College is the OCAA west region rookie of the year. He cracked the Top 25 in OCAA scoring averaging 15.1 points per game. He was even better rebounding, averaging 7.1 boards per game, good for 15th in the OCAA. Grandison was also named a west region second-team all-star and joins Bains on the OCAA all-rookie team.

Shawn Collins of Humber College is the OCAA west region coach of the year and is the OCAA nominee for CCAA coach of the year. The west regional champion Hawks were near perfect in 2014-15, losing just once in 18 games. It marked Humber's first regional title in three seasons. The Hawks were the top defensive team in the OCAA allowing a league-low 68.1 points against per game.

Georgian College's Matt Coulson is the OCAA east region coach of the year. Georgian had its best season in recent memory, finishing second in the standings at 14-6. It's the most wins by Georgian in a regular season since going 14-4 in 2003-04. The Grizzlies were third in the OCAA in team defence, allowing just 72.1 points per game.

Brandon Goin Bailey (Brampton, Ont.) of George Brown College is the OCAA east region defensive player of the year. The second-year forward was among the OCAA leaders in blocks with 22. He also contributed 65 rebounds (47 from the defensive glass) and 27 steals.

Humber's Tyrone Dickson (Scarborough, Ont.) is the OCAA west region defensive player of the year. The third-year power forward was third in the OCAA in rebounds with 217, and second in blocks with 46. Dickson is also an OCAA first-team all-star.

Daniel Gordon (Scarborough, Ont.) of Fleming College was honoured for his east regional and overall scoring championship. The second-year guard scored 593 total points for an average of 29.7 per game. Gordon is also an OCAA second-team all-star.

Chris Stanhope (Markham, Ont.) of Fanshawe College; Mike Lucier (Forest, Ont.) of Lambton College; and John Woldue (London, Ont.) of Redeemer University College join Fennell and Dickson as OCAA west region first-team all-stars.

Along with Zwarych, OCAA east region first-team all-stars include Ian Francis (Toronto) of Centennial College; Ajahmo Clarke (Ajax, Ont.) of Durham College; Akai Nettey (Etobicoke, Ont.) of George Brown; and Felix Adjei (Toronto) of Seneca College.

Kyle McConnell (London, Ont.) of Fanshawe; Branden Padgett (China Township, Mich.) of Lambton; Andrew Cicuttini (Dundas, Ont.) of Mohawk; and Calvin Turnbull (Burlington, Ont.) of Redeemer join Grandison as OCAA west region second-team all-stars.

Along with Bains and Gordon, OCAA east region second-team all-stars include Marc Antoine Belanger (Gatineau, Que.) of Collège La Cité; Funsho Dimeji (Mississauga, Ont.) of Loyalist College; and Andrew Dawkins (Brampton, Ont.) of St. Lawrence-Kingston.

Bains and Grandison are joined on the OCAA all-rookie team by Isse Ibrahim (Toronto) of Canadore College; Moses Orozco-Ray (London, Ont.) of Fanshawe; Joey Bruni (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) of Sault College; and Josh Yorke-Frazer (Scarborough, Ont.) of Seneca.
