HUMBER WINS OPENER AT NATIONAL MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

HAMILTON, Ont. - The Humber Hawks downed the Langara Falcons 77-71 in the quarter-finals of Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Basketball National Championship at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ont., on Thursday.

It looked like a possible blowout, when the Hawks, from Etobicoke, Ont., jumped to a 12-1 lead, but their opponent from Vancouver finally got rolling and trailed on 23-20 after the first quarter.

Humber, seeded fourth in the championship, increased its lead to 45-38 over fifth-ranked Langara at the intermission.

In the third period, the Hawks managed to play even with the Falcons, and led 60-54.

Langara turned the contest into a real battle early in the fourth, as it narrowed its deficit to just two points (60-58), but Humber pulled away for good, winning by six.

Gibson Eduful spearheaded the Hawks attack, scoring 18 points and adding eight rebounds and three assists. Vule Grujic, Humber's player of the game, had 16 points and eight rebounds.

For the Falcons, Jitinder Lohcham produced 18 points. Their player of the game, Garrett Ling, had 13 points and seven rebounds.

With the victory, Humber moves on to the semifinals against No. 1-seeded Holland Hurricanes of Charlottetown. That game begins 6 p.m. on Friday. Langara will face Medicine Hat on the bronze medal side of the competition at 1 p.m.
