NO MEDAL FOR MOHAWK AT CCAA MEN'S BASKETBALL NATIONALS

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - The Mohawk Mountaineers did a great job making it to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Basketball National Championship, but they won't be going home with a medal.

The Ontario silver medalists dropped a 102-91 decision to the host Keyano Huskies on Friday in Fort McMurray, Alta.

The Mountaineers, who trailed 21-17 after the first quarter managed to take a 27-24 lead early in the second period, thanks to back-to-back baskets by Lamar Barr. But Keyano regained the lead then went on a stunning 17-0 run to lead 48-28 at the half.

Mohawk played better in the third quarter, but still trailed 75-53 after 30 minutes.

The Huskies opened up a 25-point lead early in the fourth period and were never threatened, although the Mountaineers got some late buckets to make the score respectable.

Keyano had five players score in double figures. Jacob Simmons and Collin Whitely each had 16 points and three teammates added 14 apiece.

For the Mountaineers, Patrick Iavarone scored 18 points, Jeff Hunt contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds, Mohawk's Player of the Game Kareem Collins collected 15 points to go with five assists, while OJ Watson and Barr had 11 points each.

With the win, Keyano advances to the bronze medal semi-finals Saturday.

Mohawk's final appearance will be in the seventh and eighth place game against Camosun. That will be at 4 p.m. Saturday.
