LA CITE AT CANADORE

NORTH BAY, Ont. - This weekend the Canadore Panthers men's basketball squad is set to take on the Algonquin Thunder who is sitting in second place in the OCAA East Division. Tip-off will take place this Friday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Education Centre Gymnasium.

The Panther hoopsters started 2016 off on successful note last weekend at the George Brown Huskies Holiday Tournament. Despite only having 8-9 players due to injuries, they dropped a heartbreaking match with a score of 99-96 to Mohawk College who are ranked No. 4 in Canada and undefeated in the OCAA. They proceeded to bounce back defeating the Georgian Grizzlies 86-66 and finally claimed the consolation championship title by burying the Sault Cougars 80-40.

Head coach Stacy Gallagher stated, "Looking towards the second half of the season we are planning on continuing to play cohesively as a team by sharing the ball, improving communication and utilizing all of the talent we have." Gallagher also noted the team is led by nationally ranked player Tarez Hepburn who was recently ranked 37th out of the top 50 players in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association by NorthPoleHoops.com.

Their second home game of the weekend is Saturday, Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. and they will be taking on the La Cite Coyotes who are sitting in first place in the OCAA East Division.

In OCAA volleyball action this weekend, the Panther women who are currently sitting in first place just above their rival Durham College in the East Division, are starting off the second half of the season against third place Algonquin Thunder. The team is excited to add newcomer Lindsay Vanderwerde (right side) to their roster.

The Panther women will also be facing the La Cite Coyotes on Sunday, Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. and hope to continue their powerful streak throughout the weekend.

In OCAA men's volleyball competition, the Panther men are looking to test out two returning players and new additions to this year's roster. Tanner O'Brien (setter) and John Ryall (right side) are no strangers to the Panther team and are ready to prove themselves once again.

The Panther men will take on the Algonquin Thunder on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 3 p.m. and the La Cite Coyotes on Sunday, Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. and hope to be able to pull out a few wins this weekend.

All games will be held in the Education Gymnasium and admission is free.
