MOHAWK 92, SHERIDAN 90

HAMILTON, Ont. - Two successful free throws from Kareem Collins with just over six seconds to go lifted Mohawk to a 92-90 victory over Sheridan in OCAA men's basketball at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre on Wednesday.

The victory was the sixth straight to start the season for the Mountaineers, while the Bruins slipped to 6-2.

Mohawk led by eight points after each of the first and second quarters, but Sheridan was hanging around and were down by just three points, 70-67, at three quarter time. In the final period they managed to take a 71-70 lead with 8:30 to go and the teams battled tooth and nail to the finish.

Sheridan looked like they might possibly see the game out, until Xzennis Brereton sank a three-point shot with only 57.9 seconds to go to give the Mountaineers a 90-88 lead. Sheridan managed to tie the score, but Collins drew the foul when he was squeezed out by two Bruins defenders, sending the Cathedral grad to the line for his late game heroics.

It capped a very good game for Collins, who had 17 points. The top Mohawk scorer was Brereton with 20 points. OJ Watson scored 13 points and Kojo Afari had 12. Dependable Jeff Hunt pulled down 12 rebounds, 10 of them on the defensive board.

For Sheridan, Adam Elhereich had a game-high 27 points, while Dylan Periana had 26 and Brian Owusu chipped in with 20 points.

Meanwhile, after a sluggish start, the Mohawk women's basketball team got out of neutral and defeated the Sheridan Bruins 80-45.

The Mountaineers didn't have much flow against the Bruins zone defence and led only 17-15 after the first quarter. Mohawk finally started to put up points in the middle going, however, including a 30-3 run, and cruised to their fourth win in six outings.

Jessica Ireland led the home team with 12 points. Monica Batinic and JenJen Abella each had 11. Carissa Browne was the game's top rebounder with 10.

For Sheridan, which saw its record fall to 2-6, three players - Dainique Campbell, Olivia Rodriguez and Samantha Lovat - each scored nine points.
