GEORGE BROWN'S AJAHMO CLARKE BECOMES OCAA'S ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER

GEORGE BROWN'S AJAHMO CLARKE BECOMES OCAA'S ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER

KINGSTON, Ont. - In a league often dominated on the block and beyond the arc, Ajahmo Clarke's throwback game has been the OCAA's best for five years.

On Saturday afternoon, Clarke capped what has been an incredible run, becoming the province's all-time leading scorer in George Brown's 14th straight victory. He surpasses former Husky Vadim Halimov for the top spot.

Clarke's laid-back demeanor belies a game in which the 6-foot-3 guard seems to score at will. The definition of a bucket-getter, the Ajax, Ont., native is without a doubt the owner of the CCAA's best mid-range game. Whether it be automatic 16-footers, finishing in transition or working helpless defenders over in the post, he is as gifted an all-around offensive player as the province has seen.

"I feel as though he's the best wing in the country," said George Brown head coach Jon Smith. "He's certainly the best mid-range player, and most importantly he's one of those guys who always puts the team first. It's rare to find a player of Ajahmo's talent who is such a selfless teammate. He sets the tone for us every time we step on the court."

Clarke spent his first two season's as a St. Lawrence Viking, making it fitting that he set the record in Kingston, Ont., on Saturday. At Durham, where Clarke was a Lord for two years, he earned back-to-back athlete of the year honours. And finally, he is spending his last season at George Brown, captaining an 18-1 team that looks to be a serious national contender.

"For him to come to George Brown for his final season was huge for us," said George Brown manager of athletics Melanie Gerin-Lajoie. "Obviously he's a known quantity at both the provincial and national level, and Ajahmo's fit in seamlessly with what we are trying to build."

"When he's locked in, there's really nobody like him," said Gerin-Lajoie. "He's such a dominant force, so versatile on the offensive end. We feel great about our program heading into provincials."

For the third time, Clarke will finish the season north of 400 points in 2016-17. Despite the fact he carries such a heavy workload, Clarke is getting stronger as the season wears on. He has scored 20 points or more in nine of the Huskies past 10 games while remaining at an elite playmaking level. Watching Clarke play, he often seems to be an oversized point guard with his court vision and ability to find open teammates. The quality and timing of his passes no doubt put him on the shortlist of Canada's best.

While Clarke and the Huskies are happy to see the all-time record fall, it's all about playoff time for this group. Saturday's win improves the Huskies to 18-1, and they locked up the East on Friday night. With provincials on the horizon, you can be sure that for the country's seventh-ranked team Clarke's scoring record is just the beginning.

"Our goal all season has been to punch our ticket as the number on seed in the east, and that's done. Now it's time to look forward," said Smith. "We have bigger plans."
