MEN'S BASKETBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: DAY 1 RECAP

CHARLOTTETOWN - The Vancouver Island University Mariners defeated the George Brown Huskies 98-92 in the first game of the CCAA Men's National Basketball Championship tournament.

CCAA Quarter-Final #1: VIU Mariners 98, George Brown Huskies 82  

Both teams were neck and neck for a majority of the game, with neither able to gain a large lead.

This was until CCAA Player of the Year Usama Zaid began to heat up in the third quarter, dropping 17 points in the frame. The Mariners gain momentum from the strong quarter and never looked back, leading by 21 at one point.

Zaid finished the game with 42 points and 12 rebounds, and was named player of the game for VIU. Dejazmatch (DJ) James had 21 points and four rebounds off the bench to earn the award for George Brown.

CCAA Quarter-Final #4: Sheridan Bruins 91, Mount Allison Mounties 61

The Sheridan Bruins advance to the CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship tournament after defeating the Mount Allison Mounties 91-61.

The top ranked Bruins got off to a hot start, which gave them an early lead. But the underdog Mounties weren't backing down, and stormed back in the second quarter to bring the game to within three.

The Bruins weren't phased by the comeback, and battled back to take a 15 point lead going into half. In the second half, the Bruins put their foot on the gas, and won the game 91-61.

Brian Owusu was the game's top scorer, finishing with 26 points to go along with seven rebounds, and was named the Bruins player of the game. For Mount Allison, it was Bradley Fuller taking home the honours, as he finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
