CHARLOTTETOWN - For the third time in school history and first since 2006, the Nomades de Montmorency have won the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Basketball National Championship, and they will defend it on home court as they will host next season.
CCAA Gold Medal Game: Nomades De Montmorency 68, Sheridan Bruins 64
The Nomades de Montmorency upset the top-ranked Sheridan Bruins to win the CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship, spoiling Sheridan's bid for a perfect season.
Paul Williams was named player of the game for Sheridan, as he finished with a game-high 20 rebounds to go along with 14 points.
Forward Alix Lochard took home the award for the Nomades as he put up 19 points and 14 rebounds in the victory.
Nomades' guard Kevin Civil was named tournament MVP, and finished the championship game with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.
The game was very defensive, with both teams struggling on offence early. The Nomades came away with a 18-15 lead going into the second quarter.
Sheridan came out strong in the second, leading by as much as seven at one point, and took a 34-33 lead going into halftime.
Both teams remained deadlocked in the third, with neither being able to get a lead over the other. The teams went into the final quarter tied 46-46.
In the final frame, the two teams remained close, but thanks to a personal 5-0 run by Civil, the Nomades were able to get a four-point lead with under a minute to go.
A three-pointer from Dylan Periana brought the Bruins to within two, but the Nomades sealed the victory at the free throw line.
The George Brown Huskies ended their first national championship appearance since 1976 on a winning note, finishing in seventh while the Mounties settled for eighth.
George Brown got off to a hot start in the first quarter, and quickly found themselves with a nine-point lead. The Huskies went on to take a 31-22 lead going in the second, thanks largely to Kevon Mascoe, who had 14 points in the quarter.
The Mounties struggled all half to get their offence going, only shooting 34 per cent in the half. Mount Allison also struggled to controlling the ball, as they committed eight turnovers in the half, leading to 16 George Brown points.
All that combined gave the Huskies a 48-38 lead going into halftime.
Coming out of half, the Huskies took control of the game and never looked back, leading the whole way to a 95-74 win.
Mascoe was named player of the game for George Brown, as he finished with 16 points and six rebounds. Taking home the honour for the Mounties was Bradley Sanford, who had 12 points and eight rebounds.
