HAMILTON, Ont. - The Niagara Knights were in control most of the night as they defeated the Mohawk Mountaineers 84-73, spoiling the Mountaineers' season opener in OCAA men's basketball at the DBARC on Saturday.

Matt Elcock led Mohawk with 24 points. Mohammed Gaafer scored 14, Kareem Collins supplied 12 and Lamar Barr had 10 points.

"We didn't play with the energy and enthusiasm to compete at that level," said Mountaineers head coach Brian Jonker. "On the plus side, we were much better in the second half and we never gave up. We have a long way to go, but our ceiling is high."

Mohawk will attempt to break into the win column at Sheridan on Tuesday night.
