HAMILTON, Ont. - The Mohawk men's basketball team had only seven players, but they gave the OCAA's top-ranked Sheridan Bruins all they could handle, before the Bruins pulled out a 101-92 victory Tuesday at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.

The Mountaineers had a strong start, but trailed 27-25 after the first quarter and 54-51 at the half. Mohawk kept battling and were down 79-75 at three quarter time.

It looked like the Mountaineers had finally run out of steam when Sheridan opened a 13-point lead early in the final period, as the home team's shooting went cold. But then Mohawk scored three-point buckets on four consecutive trips down the court and once again, they cut the deficit to just two points. But Sheridan wouldn't allow the Mountaineers to catch them and the Bruins managed to win by nine points, but they knew they were in a real scrap from the opening tip to the final whistle.

Jaelin Bailey had 21 points and nine rebounds for Mohawk. Lamar Barr scored 20 points, Jordan Martin got 18 and Brey Sebeya added 16 points and eight boards.

Jesse Broad had nine points and eight rebounds, in what head coach Brian Jonker said was the best game the Australian has played in a Mohawk uniform.

Brian Owusu led Sheridan with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Jemol Edwards scored 17. Nick Campbell had a game-high 13 rebounds.

With the victory Sheridan upped its record to 12-0. Mohawk fell to 4-9.
