TOP FOUR TEAMS ADVANCE TO OCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Four teams are left standing after this past weekend’s quarterfinal games that took place across the Province. The teams left standing are set to compete at the OCAA Men’s Soccer Championship, hosted by Sheridan College from October 27-28, 2006.

Out of the East Region the top teams have qualified for the Championships. The defending champion Algonquin Thunder won the East Region title this year and advance to the Championships after winning their quarterfinal game, while the George Brown Huskies finished the season second in the East Region and defeated their West Region challengers to advance to the Championships. Meanwhile out of the West Region, the region leaders Humber Hawks and Sheridan Bruins will advance.

Game 1:
Saturday, October 21 – Humber Defeats Seneca 2-0
(Humber League Record 7-0-1)
Game Recap:
The West Region champion Humber Hawks earned a berth to the OCAA Championships shutting out the Seneca Sting 2-0 on Saturday. OCAA Scoring Champion, Mike Aigbokie was perfect again netting both goals in the win. The Hawks capped off their season last week with a win in their last regular season game and finished the season as the only unbeaten team in the West Region. The Hawks are set to face the George Brown Huskies in the Championship semi-finals on Friday October 27 at 5:00 pm.

Game 2:
Saturday, October 21 – Sheridan Defeats Durham 4-2
(Sheridan League Record 4-1-3)
Game Recap:
The Sheridan Bruins were victorious over the Durham Lords 4-2 on the weekend. Sheridan scored two quick goals and the Lords trailed 3-0 at the half. The Lords outscored their opponent 2-1 in the second half but it wasn’t enough. The Bruins finished the season second in the West with a 4-1-3 record and are set to take on the defending champion Algonquin Thunder in the semi-finals at the OCAA Championships. In the game Dalibor Duspara scored the hat trick and Shaun MacDonald scored the additional goal. Casey LaRussa and Rashid Konya scored for the Lords.

Game 3:
Saturday, October 21 – Algonquin Defeats Conestoga 6-0
(Algonquin League Record 7-0-1)
Game Recap:
The defending champion Algonquin Thunder earned their berth to the OCAA Championships after shutting out the Conestoga Condors 6-0 on Saturday. The Thunder finished the regular season the only unbeaten team in the East Region. Third year striker Joe Maneiro scored the hat trick while Edwin Moran, Matthew Rigby, Tyler Farrell-Rose and Orhan Akkaya netted the other goals. The Thunder will start their run at the back-to-back title in semi-final action against the Sheridan Bruins on Friday October 27 at 2:00 pm.

Game 4:
Saturday, October 21 – George Brown Defeats Fanshawe 4-3
(George Brown League Record 6-1-1)
Game Recap:
The George Brown Huskies were victorious over the Fanshawe Falcons in a close 4-3 final decision. The Huskies have earned a berth into the OCAA Championships for the first time in over ten years. First year forward Eric Amponsah netted two goals while Noel Ellerton and Kobini Nyakahuma scored a goal a piece in the win. The George Brown Huskies will take on the Humber Hawks Friday October 27 at 5:00 pm.
