CCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) is pleased to announce Algonquin College will represent Ontario at the 2007 Big Kahuna/adidas Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s National Soccer Championship. The tournament is scheduled to take place from November 7-10 hosted by Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax City’s Mainland Commons.

Algonquin College is making its fourth consecutive trip to the tournament and heads in as the defending national champions. They look to become the first Ontario men’s soccer team to win consecutive national championships. The Thunder open the tournament against the sixth ranked University of New Brunswick Saint John in their match-up on Wednesday afternoon.

Algonquin has been a model of consistency for the past decade in OCAA men’s soccer, winning six provincial titles in the last nine years. This year’s squad used excellent ball control to wear down opponents and capitalized on scoring opportunities when presented. In the gold medal match of the provincial championship, the Thunder shutdown the high scoring Huskies attack and capitalized on a defensive slip-up by a George Brown defender to win their fourth consecutive championship by a score of 1-0.

Head coach Steven O’Kane has plenty of go-to options when looking at his Thunder roster. 2006 OCAA Athlete of the Year, Loui Legakis, who traditionally sets the pace of the game led the East Region in scoring averaging 1.25 goals per game and was named to the Championship All-Star team. Will Beague was also recognized for his excellent playing being named the Championship MVP as well as a League All-Star along with teammate Stephane LeMay.

A trio of OCAA Players will be recognized at the CCAA All-Canadian Awards Banquet on Tuesday evening as Greg Remijn of the Fanshawe Falcons (London), Peter O’Donnell of the George Brown Huskies (Toronto) and Robert Malbasic of the St. Clair Saints (Windsor) will all be honoured as CCAA All-Canadians. Greg Remijn will also represent the OCAA as he is nomination for the CCAA Player of the Year Award. Sheridan Bruins head coach Tony Silvestri will be nominated for the second time in three years for the CCAA Coach of the Year award.
