OCAA MEN'S SOCCER QUALIFIERS PREVIEW

OCAA MEN'S SOCCER QUALIFIERS PREVIEW

TORONTO - What's better than Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men's soccer? OCAA men's sudden death soccer.

It is now crunch time for the 12 teams that qualified for the OCAA post-season, with only four guaranteed of a quarter-final berth. OCAA East champion Algonquin College (6-0-2), East runner-up Centennial College (5-1-2), OCAA West champion Humber College (6-1-1) and West runner-up Fanshawe College (6-1-1) earned well-deserved byes into the next round, and will have plenty of time to work off their Thanksgiving meals before they take to the pitch again.

For the other eight teams, there will be one more match before any turkey carving. Clubs will compete against division foes for one more match, as the third place team hosts the sixth-best club in their respective region, while the fifth seed visits the fourth. The winners will then crossover and visit those with byes in the opposite division.

The 2013 OCAA Men's Soccer Championship takes place at Algonquin College in Ottawa from Oct. 25-26.

St. Lawrence-Kingston (3-3-2, 6th East) at Seneca (5-2-1, 3rd East)
Wednesday, Oct. 9 - 4:30 p.m.

The St. Lawrence Vikings and Seneca Sting are wasting no time getting the post-season started.

When they last met on Sept. 20 in Kingston, Seneca departed with a 6-0 victory. The Sting had a balanced scoring attack, with five different players scoring.

Seneca is led offensively by third-year forward Mauricio Chamale (Stouffville) who scored seven goals in eight matches. Another third-year forward, Gabe Jones (Kingston), led all Vikings with six goals in eight matches.

Seneca has struggled in its last two games with a loss and draw. St. Lawrence is undefeated in its last three matches (one win and two draws). The winner visits Fanshawe in the quarter-finals.

Niagara (3-3-2, 5th West) at St. Clair (4-2-2, 4th West)
Friday, Oct. 11 - 6:30 p.m.

The West bracket begins under the lights on the shores of the Detroit River.

These teams opposed each other on the shores of the Welland Canal on Sept. 22, where the outcome was a 1-1 draw. That won't happen this time around, with extra time or penalty kicks being used to decide a winner.

St. Clair second-year midfielder Luis Cortes (Leamington) and Niagara first-year player Jordi Amores (Niagara Falls) were the goal scorers when these teams last met.

St. Clair has won two straight, while Niagara is coming off a victory in its regular season finale. The winner travels to Algonquin for the quarter-finals.

Redeemer (2-4-2, 6th West) at Sheridan (6-1-1, 3rd West)
Saturday, Oct. 12 - 2 p.m.

Although tied for the best record in the region, Sheridan did not win the tiebreaker and is forced to play an extra playoff round.

The Bruins opened the regular season at Redeemer on Sept. 7, with Sheridan winning 6-1. Fourth-year player Nicholas Lindsay (Brampton) scored three of his OCAA-leading 11 goals in the match.

Zach Kingma (Ilderton) and Lewis Tuninga (Orillia) led Redeemer with two goals each during regular season play.

Sheridan won three of its last four matches to close the season. Redeemer is winless in four matches, including two draws. The winner visits Centennial in the quarter-finals.

Fleming (4-3-1, 5th East) at Durham (5-2-1, 4th East)
Saturday, Oct. 12 - 3 p.m.

Durham edged Fleming 1-0 on the road on Sept. 17. As a result, Durham gets to host the qualifying match between these clubs.

Second-year players Kashiff DeJonge (Ajax) and Marco Trotta (Oshawa) led Durham in scoring with four goals each.

Fleming also had co-leaders in team scoring, with third-year defender Oshane Hylton (Ajax) and first-year midfielder Jacob Miller (Mono) scoring two times during the regular season.

Both Durham and Fleming are undefeated in three matches, including two wins and a draw. The winner travels to Humber for the quarter-finals.
