SENECA NAMES CARABIN MEN'S SOCCER HEAD COACH

TORONTO - Seneca Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the hiring of Sanford Carabin as the new head coach of the Seneca Sting men's indoor and outdoor soccer teams.

Carabin has extensive coaching experience at the youth, club and collegiate level, most recently serving as an assistant coach with the Centennial Colts men's soccer team. Carabin also serves as technical director for the Durham Region Soccer Association.

A member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) since 2006, Carabin's credentials allows him to stand out amongst his peers. A three-time Ontario Soccer Association long-term player development champion, Carabin also holds a Canadian national 'B' license, UEFA 'B' license and a USSF 'A' license, the highest level of license in the United States Soccer Federation.

Carabin grew up in the North York, Ont., area and recalls following the Sting, then known as the Braves, as they dominated collegiate soccer en route to three national championships from 1984 to 1986.

Although just recently hired, the Scottish-Canadian already has a vision for what his team will look like in competition.

"On the field, our aim will be to develop a possession-based, attacking style of play with a mentality amongst the players that talent and hard work are of equal importance."

Off the field, Carabin feels that it is the relationship he establishes and fosters with his student-athletes that is just as important.

"I have a very simple philosophy - understand every student-athlete. This requires establishing, growing and maintaining relationships with the players in order to communicate the expectations of the program. To achieve this, I believe it is important to form a cohesive coaching staff that invests heavily in capturing the student-athletes' loyalty, establishing one-on-one relationships and creating an environment that encourages open communication."

Joining Carabin's coaching staff will be Siamac Kavianpour, holder of a USSF 'A' license, a veteran youth club coach with extensive experience playing in the Canadian Soccer League and National Soccer league.

The Sting open the regular season on Sept. 6 at Fleming as the team looks to get back to the OCAA championship after falling in the OCAA quarter-final in 2013.
