RODNEY DANGERFIELD OF SOCCER
The Humber Hawks, two-time defending national champions, won a hard fought 1-0 road victory over Fanshawe last Sunday. Third-year midfielder Jesse Assing (Bethany, Ont.) scored the lone goal of the match.
Incidentally, Fanshawe finished in fourth place in the OCAA last season, losing the bronze medal match to Sheridan in penalty kicks.
Apparently, back-to-back national championships and a season opening win are not enough to put Humber on top of the national rankings. Or even second. The Hawks debut at No. 5, behind four clubs from each of the four other CCAA conferences.
SOMETHING BRUIN
Meanwhile, the team that hosts this year's nationals can boast the only three players with multiple goal matches through the OCAA's opening weekend.
First-year player Raheem Edwards (Toronto) netted the first hat trick of 2014 with three goals in a 9-1 win over Mohawk. Teammates Molham Babouli (Mississauga, Ont.) and David Velastegui (Quito, Ecuador) scored two goals each.
Sheridan led the OCAA with 26 goals for last season.
SHOWING THEIR MEDAL
The Algonquin Thunder's 1-0 road victory at Cambrian made it a clean sweep for 2013 OCAA medal winners in their 2014 regular season debuts.
Third-year forward Trevor Turner (Ottawa) score the winner for Algonquin. The victory extends Algonquin's regular season unbeaten streak to 24 matches, the longest active streak in OCAA.
The Thunder earned silver last season, losing to Humber 1-0 in the gold medal match.
LIGHTNING CRASHES
The OCAA regular season was set to open last Friday with Toronto rivals Centennial and George Brown locking horns. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other ideas.
The match was postponed due to lightning near Esther Shiner Stadium.
No makeup date has been announced. Centennial, George Brown and Lambton are the only teams not to see regular season action as of yet. Assuming Mother Nature doesn't interfere, all will play by week's end.
GOLDEN BOOTS
First-year midfielder Stefan Milidrag (Windsor, Ont.) broke a tie in the 82nd minute to lift St. Clair to a 3-2 victory over Conestoga.
Another first-year midfielder, Angel Angelov (Toronto), booted the game-winning goal in the final three minutes of regulation time to give the Seneca Sting a 2-1 road victory over Fleming.
Third-year midfielder Bartosz Kalisz (Oshawa, Ont.) scored the lone goal in Durham's 1-0 win over St. Lawrence.
