DURHAM TO PLAY FOR BRONZE ON SATURDAY

WELLAND, Ont. - Game two of the 2014 belairdirect OCAA men's soccer championship saw the five-time defending champion Humber Hawks take down the Durham Lords 2-0 in a hard fought game in Welland, Ont., on Friday afternoon.

Durham will now take on the Sheridan Bruins in the bronze medal match on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. at Youngs SportsPlex. This is the first meeting between the two teams this year. Sheridan, who led by two goals in their semi-final match, ended up dropping a 4-2 decision to the Algonquin Thunder.

The classic David versus Goliath match-up saw the two teams take a scoreless draw into halftime, with Durham goalkeeper Jonathan Codrington making a penalty kick save just two minutes in.

In the second half, Humber striker Jordan Piccanin (Brampton, Ont.) would eventually break the deadlock in the 51st minute.

The Lords responded to the opening Hawks goal, directing a number of quality shots towards Hawks goalkeeper Alex Pothemont (Mississauga, Ont.). Standing at over six-foot-two, the 2014 West Division top goalkeeper, lived up to his reputation turning aside all eight shots he faced in the contest.

Humber managed to add an insurance marker in the 87th minute, when Bethany, Ont., native Jesse Assing buried a rebound.

The victory moves Humber into the OCAA gold medal match against Algonquin. The championship game is a repeat of the 2013 OCAA Championship final, which saw the Hawks defeat the Thunder by a score of 1-0. Both teams currently sport undefeated records. The Hawks captured the regular season West Division title with a record of 6-0-2, while Algonquin finished at 7-0.

In addition to being crowned as OCAA champions, the winner of Saturday's game will earn the right to represent Ontario (along with the host Sheridan Bruins) at the 2014 CCAA Men's Soccer National Championship being held from Nov. 5-8 by Sheridan College.
