FLEMING HOSTS 2006 OCAA VOLLEYBALL ALL-STAR WEEKEND

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) volleyball players will descend upon Peterborough this weekend as Fleming College hosts the 14th Annual Volleyball All-Star Game on Saturday, December 2, 2006.

The game(s) pits all-stars from the Central East & East region versus the all-stars from the Central West & West region in a best-of-five-volleyball men’s and women’s match. A total of forty-eight players representing twenty Colleges from across Ontario have been selected to compete at the event.

The women’s competition is set for 3:30 p.m., with the men’s competition following at 5:30 p.m. All events will be held at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre.

The event will also feature an OCAA Coaches Clinic with Lorne Sawula, a former Senior Women’s National Team Coach. The athletes have been awarded this special opportunity to practice with the OCAA All-Star coaches and National Team Coach to help build their volleyball skills and training.

In last year’s All-Star Game the East reined the weekend winning both the men’s (2-1) and women’s (2-1) competition. Overall the East leads the West in both contests as the East men hold an 8-5 lead in the all-time series while the East women are 9-4 in the series.

Set to compete in the women’s competition are the leading scorers from three of the four league regions. Hitting the court will be Algonquin’s fourth year left side Sarah Hazlewood (4.54 PPG), Canadore’s first year left side Eve Thibault (4.67 PPG) and Cambrian’s fourth year middle blocker Laura Fowler (4.67 PPG). Leading the West on the sidelines will be Niagara’s Head Coach Kerby Bentley and Mohawk’s Head Coach Brian McEnhill, while Durham’s Stan Marchut and Algonquin’s Everton Senior will coach the East Team.

On the men’s side the East Team looks good to defend their title with Loyalist’s Dan Lazenby (4.36 PPG) and Seneca’s JR Sapienza (4.29 PPG) leading the front court while floor leader Dave Keo of Algonquin will manage the ball distribution. Meanwhile the West Team will look to avenge last year’s 2-1 loss behind the hard hitting of St. Clair’s James Smyth (3.86 PPG) and Nipissing’s Eric Yung (4.20 PPG) while Mohawk’s Matthew Schnarr will oversee the defence at the libero position.

Coaching on the sidelines of the men’s East Team will be Durham’s Head Coach Gord Williamson while Fanshawe’s Assistant Coach Josh Westgate will manage the West Team.
