It was just a matter of time until men’s volleyballer,
Jasmin Cull, would break the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association
(OCAA) All-Time Career Aces record, and last night versus the
Sheridan Bruins he did just that. With seven aces to his credit in
the five set match, Cull overtook Redeemer’s Rich Vanderwier
for the career achievement.
A fourth year player, Cull has turned in several dominant
performances this season including a 12 ace performance to kick off
the season versus the Fanshawe Falcons. The Ancaster native is
currently averaging 7.2 aces per match and should break the
individual scoring record for Single Season Aces in his upcoming
tilt versus the St. Clair Saints on Saturday, January 19. Cull is
just two aces away from tying the mark set by Georgian’s Eric
Talsma who set the standard in the 2005-06 season with 38 aces.
“It’s nice to break a record, and I’m happy about
the achievement, but aces really don’t mean that much to
me,” said Cull, who continues, “at this point I would
rather win gold with our team and have that memory last forever.
It’s the last year for some of the guys and nothing would be
sweeter then winning with the most amazing team I have ever played
with.”
If Cull is able to maintain his current pace, which would leave him
with 79 aces on the year; this could be one record that will stand
for a while as the Mohawk Mountaineers still have six games
remaining on their regular season schedule.
What lays ahead for the 6’4 standout? “I’ve
worked hard to become a better player, and so that I could get
myself recognized in volleyball in hopes it might take me
somewhere,” said Cull. “I still want to work hard for
my future goal of playing pro over seas and playing at the highest
level.”
Jasmin began his OCAA career in the 2003-04 where he played one
full season with the Loyalist Lancers and three games of a second
season, before sitting out the remainder of the season to ensure
his eligibility when he transferred to his current Mohawk team.
Since arriving in Hamilton, he has earned an OCAA Silver medal with
the Mountaineers and currently, Cull’s Mohawk team is the top
ranked team in Ontario and the sixth ranked team in the Canadian
Colleges Athletic Association.
