NORTH BAY, Ont. - The finest collegiate men's volleyball teams in Ontario will be at Nipissing University later this month competing for gold medal glory in the 2012 Ontario Collegiate Athletics Association (OCAA) Men's Provincial Volleyball Championship.
Nipissing University announced today that they are the host institution for the championships, taking place February 23–25, 2012.
The three day championship tournament will feature eight teams from across Ontario. The top two teams in each division qualify for the championships; the remaining four teams are determined by crossover playoff matches.
The Lakers team currently holds second place in the OCAA West division with a 12–1 record, two points back of the Humber Hawks and two points up on the Mohawk Mountaineers.
This will be the first major tournament to be held in
Nipissing's newly expanded Robert J. Surtees Athletics Centre,
which opened this year. The expansion includes a new 20,000
square-foot gymnasium that features seating for 1,200 spectators
and a 17-foot by 11-foot jumbotron video board for highlights and
videos. The facility also features a Living Wall, an interior wall
completely covered with vegetation, that improves air quality and
reduces heating costs while offering some very cool aesthetic value
as well.
"Nipissing is excited to be able to host the provincial
championships. It's a prestigious event and we are very pleased to
invite our community and our province to come to our new facility
and see some of the finest student-athletes in the province compete
for volleyball gold," said Vito Castiglione,
Nipissing's manager of sports and recreation and the tournament
chair. "It is going to be a great experience for our team and our
fans, as well as, the entire city."
