NORTH BAY, Ont. - Humber College's
Terrel Bramwell was named the Ontario Colleges
Athletic Association (OCAA) men's volleyball player of the year in
a ceremony held at the Davedi Club in North Bay, Ont. on Thursday
morning as part of the 2012 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship.
Bramwell had one of the best seasons in recent memory, averaging
6.7 points per set, 1.6 points better than his closest rival and
easily winning the OCAA West region scoring championship. The
third-year right side set a new OCAA single match record with 36
kills against Redeemer on Nov. 22, and tied his own record of 40
points in a match, also against Redeemer on Feb. 3.
The Mississauga, Ont., native also led OCAA in kills per set
averaging 5.67 while also contributing 26 aces and 25 blocks. His
production helped lead Humber to an OCAA West regional championship
with a regular season record of 17-1, including a 14-match win
streak to end the season. Bramwell is a Canadian Collegiate
Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian, as well as an OCAA West
Division first-team all-star.
Justin Scapinello (London, Ont.) of Mohawk was
also named a CCAA all-Canadian. Last year's OCAA rookie of the year
was fourth in league scoring averaging 4.4 points per set. The
right side also led OCAA in service aces averaging 0.83 per set.
Scapinello is also a West Division first-team all-star.
Eric Yung of Nipissing is the OCAA West coach of
the year and its nominee for CCAA coach of the year. The
second-year head coach of the Lakers inspired his team to a
five-game improvement on its regular season record from a season
ago, with their only blemish coming against Humber. Conversely,
Nipissing also handed Humber its only loss of the regular season.
Yung has a trio of players recognized as OCAA West first-team
all-stars, including Taylor Bielby (Barrie, Ont.),
Scott Coulthard (Wingham, Ont.) and
Frankie Edgecombe (Elmvale, Ont.).
Sheridan's Jeremy Fantin (Mississauga, Ont.) was
named the OCAA rookie of the year to go along with his West
Division rookie award. The left side led his team with 214 points,
160 kills and 46 blocks, and helped soften the blow of losing last
year's OCAA player of the year Andrew Henry.
Brad Van Hartingsveldt (Newcastle, Ont.) of
Durham was named the top rookie in the OCAA East region. The setter
contributed 91 points on 42 kills, 40 blocks and nine aces.
Doug Anton of Algonquin was named OCAA East coach
of the year. Algonquin saw a six-win improvement on its record from
last year, winning the East regional championship with a 19-1
record. Anton also coached a pair of OCAA East first-team all-stars
in Alexandre Corsi Caya (Ottawa) and Josh
Harris (Kitchener, Ont.).
Keith Marier (Ottawa) of La Cite headlines the
other OCAA East first-team all-stars. Marier was the OCAA East
region scoring champion, setting OCAA single season records with
404 points and 346 kills. Peter Christian
(Chatham, Ont.) and Gabriel Harrietha (Markham,
Ont.) of Seneca, Mike Hammond (Barrie, Ont.) of
Georgian and Loyalist's Matt Woods (Pickering,
Ont.) were also named OCAA East first-team all-stars.
Rounding out the OCAA West first-team all-star team is Humber's
Andre Brown (Mississauga, Ont.) and Fanshawe's
Matthew Stewart (Brisbane, Australia).
OCAA East second-team all-stars include Dean
Johnson (Calgary), Costa Solanakis
(Ottawa) and Craig Toonders (Ottawa) of regional
champion Algonquin; Steven Clarey (Baltimore,
Ont.) and Dave McMann (Elmvale, Ont.) of Durham;
Predrag Gajic (Scarborough, Ont.) of Seneca; and
Loyalist's Josh Lappala (Kingston, Ont.).
Josh Butler (London, Ont.) and Frank
Pento (Mississauga, Ont.) of Sheridan; David
Klomps (Surrey, B.C.) and Aaron Vander
Lugt (Hamilton, Ont.) of Redeemer; Nipissing's
Andre Leblanc (Sudbury, Ont.); Derek
Quinn (Mississauga, Ont.) of Humber; and Sam
Youlton (Chatham, Ont.) of Fanshawe were named OCAA West
second-team all-stars.
