HUMBER THREE-PEATS AS OCAA MEN’S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONS

HUMBER THREE-PEATS AS OCAA MEN’S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONS

NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Humber Hawks successfully defended their Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men's volleyball championship for the second straight year, defeating the Nipissing Lakers in straight sets to earn a third consecutive OCAA title.

The 2012 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship was hosted by Nipissing University in North Bay, Ont.

OCAA player of the year Terrel Bramwell (Mississauga, Ont.) contributed 24 points on 22 kills, one ace and one block in the 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-22) victory. Teammate Derek Quinn (Mississauga, Ont.) and Nipissing's Taylor Bielby (Barrie, Ont.) were named players of the game for their respective teams.

Humber had one close call during the tournament. After a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-23) win over Redeemer in the quarter-final, the Hawks were forced to come back from a two-set deficit to defeat Mohawk 3-2 (22-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-6) in the semi-final. Humber finished the 2011-12 OCAA schedule with a 20-1 record.

Quinn was named tournament MVP. Humber's Bramwell and Andre Brown (Mississauga, Ont.), Nipissing's Frankie Edgecombe (Elmvale, Ont.) and Scott Coulthard (Wingham, Ont.), Mohawk's Ian Cameron (Hamilton, Ont.) and Seneca's Peter Christian (Chatham, Ont.) were named tournament all-stars.

Humber's three consecutive men's volleyball titles are the most in succession since Loyalist's three-peat from 1996-97 to 1998-99.

Humber goes on to represent OCAA at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Volleyball National Championship, taking place in Abbotsford, B.C. from March 8-10.

It was a fitting final, as host Nipissing was the only team to hand Humber a regular season loss, as both teams split their regular season series. Nipissing's silver medal was its first ever in OCAA men's volleyball.

Nipissing defeated Durham 3-2 (25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 23-25, 15-11) in the quarter-final and Algonquin 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-23) in the semis.

The OCAA bronze medal went to Mohawk for a second straight season. The Mountaineers defeated Seneca 3-1 (25-15, 15-25, 25-17, 25-19) in a rematch of not only the 2011 bronze medal game, but a quarter-final match on Thursday. That match lasted five sets, with Mohawk prevailing 25-22, 22-25, 26-24, 22-25, 15-8.

Cameron and Christian were named players of the game in the bronze medal match. Cameron contributed 11 kills and four blocks for 15 points in a winning cause. Christian had a team-high 13 points for Seneca on a dozen kills and one ace.

Since winning the OCAA championship in 2008, Mohawk has won bronze medals in three of the past four seasons.
