PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - West proved to be best at the 2012 OCAA
Volleyball All-Star Games played last Saturday at Fleming College
in Peterborough, Ont.
In the women's match, Team West needed the maximum number of sets
to defeat Team East 3-2 (13-25, 25-23, 25-20, 14-25, 15-13).
Nipissing's Brittany Ardron (Lakefield, Ont.) led
all players with 14 offensive points on seven kills, four serving
aces and three stuff blocks, while also adding 10 digs. The OCAA
rookie of the year was fittingly named Team West player of the
game.
Redeemer's Erika Straatsma (Brampton, Ont.) and
Sheridan's Melissa Cappelletti (Cambridge, Ont.)
contributed six kills each in the victory.
Algonquin's Emily Graham (Winnipeg) earned player
of the game honours for Team East in a losing effort. She had a
game-high five aces, while adding three kills for eight points.
Other notable players for Team East included Marie-France
Cayer (Winchester, Ont.) of La Cite and her 11 points on
six kills, three aces and two blocks; hometown favourite
Rachel Loch (Lakeshore, Ont.) of
Fleming-Peterborough and her seven points on three aces, two kills
and two blocks; and Cambrian's Kelsey Fielding
(Sudbury, Ont.) and her six kills.
In the men's match, Team West defeated Team East 3-1 (25-21, 25-17,
22-25, 25-21). There was no letup for OCAA and national men's
volleyball player of the year Terrel Bramwell
(Mississauga, Ont.) of Humber as his match-high 16 points on 10
kills, five aces and one block landed him player of the game
honours for Team West.
Also rising to the occasion for Team West was Mohawk's
Justin Scapinello (London, Ont.) and his six
kills, one ace and one block for eight points, as well as
Nipissing's Frankie Edgecombe (Elmvale, Ont.) and
his match-high four stuff blocks and three kills for seven
points.
Georgian's Mike Hammond (Barrie, Ont.) was named
player of the game for Team East, contributing a team-high 10
points on nine kills and one block in his final OCAA match. Team
East teammate Josh Harris (Kitchener, Ont.) of
Algonquin contributed six kills and one ace for seven points in his
final match.
The 19th annual OCAA Volleyball All-Star Games brought together the
elite collegiate volleyball players from across the province for a
day of camaraderie and competition. Fifty student-athletes
represented 21 Ontario colleges and universities at this year's
event.
