He wears "No. 1" on his volleyball jersey for a reason.
Edwin Sheon is the best player on the men's team
at George Brown College.
It's no fluke either.
Just watching the 5-foot-10 left-side hitter play the sport, he
often take control of a game and always has a keen eye on setting
up his teammates. That speaks volumes for the 22-year old.
And try calling him the "Mike Holmes" of the Huskies squad. Holmes
is widely known for his TV show as Canada's acclaimed builder and
contractor. Sheon is studying Building Renovations at George Brown
and hoping to, yes, build the Huskies a contender for the Ontario
Colleges Athletic Association championship set for February 23 in
Oakville.
Last time George Brown won the OCAA title was back in 1969.
Chosen volleyball MVP at Brebeuf, his former high school, Sheon is
in his second year at George Brown - returning to complete his
education after taking time off to try the work force and realizing
that Diploma was important.
"Volleyball is my passion," he said. "Now, more than ever, I am
more aware of my surroundings, more mature and wanting to be
successful in a career. I want to build homes in the future and now
build a successful team."
Getting a glimpse of him in game action, Sheon is using his hands
alright - building a successful team.
George Brown head coach Josh Nichol didn't
hesitate when asked where Sheon was on his team in terms of talent
and knowledge.
"He's our best player and the team leader," said Nichol.
While George Brown is challenging for the lead in the OCAA's East
Division, Sheon is also statistically one of the Top 10 players in
the province - but it's an accomplishment he seems to acknowledge
as secondary.
"We play as a unit," he said. "So far, this has been one of my
most successful years playing volleyball. But when my time is over
(at George Brown), what I really want to have accomplished is
something that I can be proud of in the years to come."
