BARRIE, Ont. - Algonquin College's Philippe Yeldon was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men's volleyball player of the year for the second straight season in a ceremony held in Barrie, Ont. on Thursday morning as part of the 2014 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship.
The OCAA East Division scoring champion led all OCAA players averaging 5.5 points per set. Yeldon totaled 359 points on 289 kills, 36 blocks and 34 aces for an Algonquin team that won the OCAA East regional crown for a third straight season. The Ottawa native is also a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian, as well as an OCAA East Division first-team all-star.
Mathieu Poulin (Winnipeg, Man.) of Fanshawe College and Daniel Groenveld (Welland) of Niagara College are also CCAA all-Canadians. Poulin is the OCAA West scoring champion averaging 5.1 points per set with 319 points on 268 kills, 31 service aces and 20 blocks. Groenveld is the second leading scorer in the OCAA West averaging 4.4 points per set. He totaled 275 points on 237 kills, 27 service aces and 11 blocks. Poulin and Groenveld headline the OCAA West Division first-team all-stars.
Mohawk College's Bryce Marcussen (Strathroy) was named the OCAA rookie of the year to go along with his West Division rookie award. Marcussen led Mohawk in team scoring averaging 3.4 points per set. He tallied 129 kills, 51 blocks and nine service aces for 189 points. Marcussen is also an OCAA West first-team all-star and headlines the first-ever West all-rookie team.
Jacob White (Brockville) of Loyalist College is the OCAA East rookie of the year. White led Loyalist in team scoring averaging 4.3 points per set, earning 291 points on 247 kills, 30 blocks and 14 service aces. White is a member of the OCAA East first-team all-stars and East all-rookie team.
Patrick Johnston of Fanshawe is the West Division coach of the year and is the OCAA nominee for CCAA coach of the year. Johnston's first year at the helm of the Falcons has been an unmitigated success, as Fanshawe improved to 14-4 this season after a .500 record in 2012-13. The record was good for second place in the division, and a direct bye into the OCAA championship.
Loyalist's Dave Templar is the East Division coach of the year. After a sub-.500 mark last season, Templar led the Lancers to an 11-7 record, good for fourth place in the division and a post-season berth.
Joining Yeldon and White as OCAA East Division first-team all-stars are Keith Marier (Ottawa) of La Cité Collégiale; Riley McAllister (Whitby) and Dan Popovic (Pickering) of Durham College; Clay Couchman (Orangeville) of Fleming College; and Jordan Darlington (Ajax) of Seneca College.
Along with Poulin, Groenveld and Marcussen, West Division first-team all-stars include Andre Brown (Mississaga) of West Division champion Humber College; Bailey Cochrane (Barrie) of Niagara; and Jason Hernandez (Harrow) and Josh Lynch (Windsor) of St. Clair College.
OCAA East second-team all-stars include Patrick Goulet (Ottawa) and Ian McAlpine (Ottawa) of Algonquin; Charlie Hancock (North Bay) of Canadore College; Jeremy Hoekstra (Cobourg) and Brad vanHartingsveldt (Newcastle) of Durham; Richard Serote (Toronto) of George Brown College; and Kam Fung Tai (Thornhill) of Loyalist.

The first-ever OCAA East all-rookie team is comprised of White; Nikita Yastrebov (Russia) of Algonquin; Canadore's Hancock; Petrus Kuypers (Haydon) of Durham; John Luu (Mississauga) of George Brown; Brandon Bouwmans (Baltimore) of Loyalist; and Griffin Williams (London) of Trent.
The OCAA West all-rookie team includes Marcussen; Sean Moore (Sudbury) of Cambrian College; Nate Van Camp (Port Perry) of Fanshawe; Craig Barclay (Brooklin) and Kamyn Wilkins (Mississauga) of Humber; Bailey Cochrane (Barrie) of Niagara; and Justin Kong (Burlington) of Sheridan.
