FANSHAWE TAKES OCAA MEN'S VOLLEYBALL BRONZE MEDAL

BARRIE, Ont. - The Fanshawe men's volleyball team finished the 2014 season off by capturing the OCAA provincial bronze medal last Saturday at Georgian College in Barrie, Ont.

This was the first time the Fanshawe men's volleyball program has won a medal at the championships since the 2006-07 season, where they also earned a bronze. It is also the fourth medal in the program's history (one gold, three bronze).

On Thursday, Fanshawe won its opening game of the tournament versus the George Brown Huskies in three straight sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-17). Fanshawe's left side Kyle Weber earned player of the game honours with his team-high 14 points (nine kills, three blocks, two aces).

On Friday night, the Falcons faced the Mohawk Mountaineers in the OCAA semi-final. Fanshawe took the first set but dropped the next three (25-21, 24-26, 16-25, 14-25) and moved into the bronze medal round. All-Canadian and West Division scoring champion Mathieu Poulin registered 23 kills for Fanshawe in the loss.

On Saturday morning, Fanshawe defeated the Niagara Knights in the bronze semi-final game 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 30-28). Poulin had an impressive 30 points for the Falcons, including 26 kills.

In the bronze medal final, the Falcons took care of business and won in three straight sets over the OCAA East champion Algonquin Thunder (25-19, 25-16, 25-22). Fanshawe's Derek Braun was named the game's MVP, recording 10 kills and three blocks.

For his efforts all tournament, Poulin was named as an OCAA championship all-star.
