OCAA IN THE KNOW: MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

OCAA IN THE KNOW: MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

TRÈS BIEN

Having dropped 10 of its first 11 matches to begin the regular season, La Cité came up with a pair of 3-1 home victories this weekend, and with it, put their east counterparts on notice.

La Cité defeated both Seneca (7-6) and Georgian (5-7), two teams currently battling for the final playoff spot. It was an opportunity lost for both squads, having both defeated Algonquin one day prior. Incidentally, Algonquin (6-7) holds the final playoff spot but has now lost five straight.

In a case of great or bad timing, La Cité hosts crosstown rival Algonquin on Saturday. The Coyotes could offer a crowning blow to Algonquin's playoff ambitions with a third straight win.

La Cité first-year right side Michel Leblanc (Ottawa) combined for 35 points in the two victories while teammate Samuel Pajot (Ottawa) contributed 18 points. Leblanc recorded a career-best 18 kills against Seneca, then followed this up with 16 kills and 17 points versus Georgian.

MEDIEVAL TIMES

The Trent Excalibur moved into a tie for third place in the east region, having won five of their last six matches. Their only blemish was a five-set loss against undefeated Durham (13-0).

At 7-5, Trent are already guaranteed a better record than its 5-13 mark last season. The Excalibur are led by third-year player Andrew Kretz (St. Catharines, Ont.) and his 3.5 points per set.

Trent plays the next three on the road, beginning with a trip to Loyalist. The Excalibur then make the journey north to Georgian before an important third-place showdown with Canadore.

NO REPEAT

The Sheridan Bruins missed out on an opportunity to pull even with Humber near the top of the west region with a 3-1 home loss to the Hawks.

Fourth-year player Jeremy Fantin (Mississauga, Ont.) earned a match-high 17 kills in the loss. The Bruins did a good job containing all-time OCAA leading scorer Terrel Bramwell (Mississauga, Ont.), holding him to just 15 kills and 17 points. Sheridan defeated Humber in five sets back in November.

As a result, the Bruins (9-4) trail Humber (11-2) by two matches. While Humber currently leads the west standings, defending OCAA champion Mohawk (10-1) has two matches in hand.

Sheridan head west on an important road trip this weekend, visiting Fanshawe (7-3) and St. Clair (8-3). A win in either of these matches could be the difference between Sheridan hosting a playoff match, or heading on the road to begin the post-season.

BAKER'S DOZEN

The Durham Lords continue to hold the longest win streak in OCAA men's volleyball winning 13 straight to open the season.

The Lords have dropped a league-low eight sets, but have been taken to five sets three times.

One of those matches was against Georgian, a team Durham hosts next Wednesday.
