VERY WELL
It stands to reason that there will be a new all-time OCAA points
leader late Thursday night at Humber College's north campus.
Veteran Humber left side Terrel Bramwell
(Mississauga, Ont.) is within 16 points of Keith
Marier's record of 1,069. Bramwell has recorded at least
20 points in his last five matches, and also surpassed 30 twice. A
new mark appears fait accompli.
Bramwell is also chasing Marier's all-time kills record, but will
have his work cut out for him if he is to set the mark against
Conestoga. Bramwell is 34 kills behind the all-time record of
910.
If Bramwell doesn't set the record at home, he will have an
opportunity Sunday at Niagara. He is currently averaging 6.0 points
per set, 1.4 points better than his closest rival.
SHORT STAY AT THE TOP
It took Marier four seasons at Algonquin and La Cité to
establish his record totals. It will take less than half of a
season for Bramwell to break his milestones.
Marier became the all-time kills and points leader back on Jan.
12, surpassing the then record of 787 kills and 929 points
established by Loyalist's Kyle Donnan. Marier used
his remaining matches in January and February to pad his
totals.
Records were made to be broken, but likely too soon for Marier's
liking.
LORD OF THE WINS
The Durham Lords added to their OCAA-best record of 7-0 with a 3-1
(25-16, 22-25, 25-21, 25-19) win at home over Canadore. It marked
just the third time Durham dropped a set this season.
Three Lords hit double digits in points, including Jeremy
Hoekstra (Cobourg, Ont.) and his match-high 18.
Matthew McGirr (Brampton, Ont.) contributed 14,
while Nick Coleman (Brooklin, Ont.) recorded a
dozen.
Durham has been one of the better programs in recent history. The
Lords had a win-streak of 13 last season en route to a 16-2 record.
Durham was 17-3 in 2012-13.
The Lords look to run the first-half table with games at Fleming
on Thursday and home against George Brown on Tuesday. Fleming is in
a tie for third in the east standings with a 5-2 record.
STEELTOWN SHOWDOWN
Mohawk rebounded from its first loss of the regular season to
defeat crosstown rival Redeemer in four sets. Set scores were
25-18, 28-30, 25-10 and 25-20 in favour of the Mountaineers.
Second-year outside hitter Charlie Hancock (North
Bay, Ont.) led all players with 24 points on 21 kills, two aces and
a block. Hancock has been a valuable addition to Mohawk averaging
4.0 points per set. He was a member of the Canadore Panthers last
season.
Mohawk is currently in a tie with Humber for first place in the
west standings at 6-1, just ahead of Sheridan and St. Clair at
6-2.
It has been a struggle for Redeemer to say the least. Less than
two seasons removed from their OCAA bronze medals, the Royals have
lost their last six straight matches.
GO FIGURE
Sheridan handed Humber its first loss with a five-set victory on
Nov. 19.
St. Clair defeats Sheridan in four sets on Saturday.
Humber sweeps St. Clair in three sets the following day.
There is a reason they call it the wild west.
