FANSHAWE WINS OCAA MEN'S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

FANSHAWE WINS OCAA MEN'S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

NORTH YORK, Ont. - In the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men's volleyball gold medal match, the Mohawk Mountaineers took on the Fanshawe Falcons in one of the most exciting matches of the championship. The Falcons used their power to propel them to the OCAA title 25-20, 25-16, 27-25.

The opening set was one of the most energetic and thunderous opening sets of the championship.  Both teams came out hitting with power. The two teams pulled off massive kills and worked to keep the score close as both sides took turns seeking the momentum. The Falcons pulled away late, scoring eight of the final 10 points to win the opening set 25-20.

The second set saw more back and forth action as the points were coming fast and furiously. Midway through the set, the Falcons scored six straight points to open the set up. With a lead intact, the Falcons would close out the set, winning 25-16.

The third set was an incredible thriller with neither team leading by more than three points. The Mountaineers held a lead for the majority of the set, but the Falcons were able to come back from down three points to tie the set at 25. From there, the Falcons were able to take control, scoring two quick points to win the third set and the OCAA championship.

The Falcons and Mountaineers advance to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Volleyball National Championship March 10-12, hosted by Douglas College.

The OCAA bronze medal match saw the defending gold medalist Niagara Knights take on the Sheridan Bruins. In a high energy match, the Bruins overcame dropping the fourth set to pull off an exciting 15-6 victory in the final set (21-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21, 15-6).

A spirited opening set saw the Knights come out hitting hard and often. Using their strength and power, the Knights took an early lead and never looked back, leading the entire way to a 25-21 open set win.

In the second set, the Bruins came alive, taking an early lead and never looking back. The Bruins scored 10 of the final 13 points to win the set 25-17.

The energy picked up dramatically in the third set as both teams sought an advantage in the match. The teams went back and forth until the Bruins broke a 21-21 tie to go on to win the third set 25-23.

Niagara would not go away easily. The fourth set saw the Knights battle and bring back the power they had used all championship long. The Bruins made it interesting, but the Knights were able to force a fifth set, winning the fourth set 25-21.

An energetic fifth set saw the Sheridan Bruins get an early lead and the Bruins determined not to give it up. Heavy hitting and solid defence helped the Bruins win the fifth set 15-6 and take home the OCAA bronze medal.
