MOHAWK DEFEATED IN OPENER OF CCAA MEN'S VOLLEYBALL NATIONALS

NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. - The Mohawk men's volleyball team will have to aim for a bronze now, after their gold medal hopes were dashed in their opening match at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Volleyball National Championship at Douglas College in New Westminster, B.C. on Thursday.

The reigning national champions from Camosun College in Victoria defeated the Mountaineers 25-13, 25-18, 25-20.

Savana Walkingbear led the Chargers with 15 kills and was named Player of the Match for the winners.

Trevor McLaughlin had 14 kills for Mohawk. Eric Girard with nine kills, one service ace and seven digs was adjudged the Mountaineers' top player. Chris Spack had 23 assists.

The Mountaineers will meet the St. Thomas University Tommies of Fredericton on Friday at 4 p.m. ET and they must win to keep the bronze medal hope alive. The Tommies were swept 3-0 by the top-ranked team in the country, the Red Deer Kings of Alberta.
