OCAA BASKETBALL STARS WERE FULLY SHINING AS WEST DEFEATS EAST AT ALL-STAR GAME

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) 19th edition of Basketball All-Star Saturday took place at Durham College in Oshawa on Saturday, January 21st at the Campus Athletic Centre. “We were very proud to host this major event for the 9th time in the 19 year history of the OCAA All-Star Game”, stated Athletic Director Ken Babcock.

Behind the voice of former OCAA announcer and present “Voice of the NBA Toronto Raptors”, Mr. Herbie Kuhn, Lord Durham and the over 1100 in attendance, the CAC was fully shining.

The night opened with the Women’s West All-Stars (Team Earl Begg) behind Player of the Game Jessica King’s (Algoma Thunderbirds – Sault Ste. Marie) 6 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists defeating the East All-Stars (Team Bonnie Bacvar) 74-58. Leading the offensive charge for the West All-Stars was Jenn Ranter (Redeemer Royals - Ancaster) dropping 19 points, Erin Chamberlain (Humber Hawks – Etobicoke) scoring 14 points and teammate Sarah Moxley (Humber Hawks – Etobicoke) adding 12 points. For the East All-Stars, Durham’s own Player of the Game Samantha McConnell had 11 points and 2 rebounds. Also adding to the score sheet was Melissa Meacham (St. Lawrence Vikings – Kingston) scoring 13 points and Jennifer Allen (Algonquin Thunder – Ottawa) adding 8 points.

Other All-Star Saturday festivities included, the Co-Ed 2-Ball Team Competition captured by the Algonquin Thunder (Ottawa) duo of Jenna Ritchie and Emmanuel Beaucicaut. The Spalding/T. Litzen Sports 3-Point Shootout Champions for 2006 were Lindsay Nield of the St. Clair Saints (Windsor) and Nathan Whalen of the Sault Cougars (Sault Ste. Marie). Runner-ups were Kim Darch (Georgian Grizzlies – Barrie) and Andrew Motta (Sheridan Bruins – Toronto).

“Sammy Sting” (Seneca College) outwitted, outplayed and outlasted Lord Durham (Durham College), Mo (Mohawk College) and Freddy the Falcon (Fanshawe College) to be crowned the 2006 OCAA Best Mascot, voted on by the fans. The 1100 in attendance were also treated to performances by the R.H. Cornish Public School Hand Drumming Band, The Humber Hype Dance Pack and national anthems song by DC/UOIT Campus Idol Winner, Sarah Giguere.

All in all, it was an OCAA Basketball All-Star Saturday that everyone sat back and enjoyed all the action at the CAC!
