LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - The first day of the BMO CCAA Women's Basketball Nationals concluded with the third-seeded UNBC Timberwolves facing off against the sixth-seeded Algonquin Thunder.
The opening quarter was a tightly contested physical affair that came to a close with a slim Thunder lead by a score of 18-17.
The back and forth contest continued into the second quarter, with no team being able to decisively pull ahead. The Timberwolves headed into halftime with a 35-34 lead.
Midway through the third quarter the Thunder were able to break open a 10 point lead. The Timberwolves rallied to end the third frame and headed into the fourth trailing by a score of 52-46.
The Thunder were able to break away from a deadlocked game in the final minutes of the fourth, besting the Timberwolves 74-62.
Guard Abeer Farhat was recognized as the player of the game for the Thunder as she poured in 23 points while dishing out seven assists.
Algonquin will face the second-seeded Dawson Blues with a spot in the title game on the line.
