ALGONQUIN FALLS SHORT AT WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NATIONALS

TRURO, N.S. - The St. Thomas University Tommies dispatched the Algonquin College Thunder 64-47 in bronze medal semifinal action at the 2013 CCAA Women's Basketball National Championship on Saturday. STU rebounded from a disappointing loss to Dawson College to keep their medal hopes alive.

The Tommies trailed 15-14 after the first quarter, but then exploded for 18 points while limiting the Thunder to only four in the second frame. St. Thomas never looked back after that as they dominated the second half in an impressive offensive display.

Laura Anderson and Hilary Goodine led the Tommies with 11 points apiece, while Kelly Vass was strong on the glass with eight rebounds. The lone bright spot for Algonquin was Sandre Bascoe who had a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds. Bascoe ran into foul trouble early in the second quarter which greatly hindered the Thunder attack.

The loss signals the end to Algonquin's season. Despite winning the OCAA championship, they were not able to duplicate that effort on the national stage.

STU will face the Olds College Broncos to decide who wins the bronze. The third-place game will be at 6 p.m. at the Langille Athletic Centre.
