DURHAM 80, SENECA 69

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's basketball team outscored Seneca by 19 points in the second half of their OCAA season opener to earn an 80-69 victory over the Sting.

With the win, Durham is 10-2 overall with a 1-0 conference record. This wrapped up a busy start for the program as they played their fifth game in as many nights.

Kate Mowat (Whitby, Ont.) recorded a double-double for the green and gold as she scored 20 points and added 10 rebounds. She was two assists shy of a triple-double as she had eight assists in the win.

The Lords scoring was well-balanced with three other players recording at least 14 points. Kelsey Hare (Whitby, Ont.) recorded 15 points while Kauri LaFontaine (Whitby, Ont.) and Kayla Marshall (Ottawa, Ont.) had 14 apiece. Lafontaine would add seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals to her totals.

With the Lords trailing by eight points at the half, Durham outscored Seneca 25-9 in the third quarter which was led by LaFontaine scoring seven points. Although the Sting would hang around in the fourth quarter, Durham would manage to eventually pull out the 11-point win to open up conference play.

Seneca would try to trap Durham with a full-court press throughout the night, but the Lords would go on the counter-attack with quick passes which would generate some open-look shots and fast breaks.

Tuesday night was Heather LaFontaine's OCAA conference debut as head coach of the Lords.

Durham will go on the road next week as they take on the St. Lawrence Vikings on Wednesday, Oct. 30. Game time is at 6 p.m.
