ALGONQUIN 57, DURHAM 45

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's basketball team lost 57-45 to the Algonquin Thunder Friday night at the CRWC.

The three-time defending OCAA champions, Algonquin College led from start to finish in a game that saw turnovers and offensive rebounds as the difference makers. Durham collected only 10 offensive rebounds which is a stark contrast when compared with Algonquin's 26 offensive boards. As well, Durham also committed 29 turnovers in the losing effort.

The game started slowly for both teams as the first quarter ended with Algonquin leading 11-7. Energy for the Lords was brought off the bench from Hellen Dumbuya (Whitby, Ont.) and Katelynn Sheilds (Courtice, Ont.) who each collected crucial rebound put-backs at the end of the quarter to keep within reach. However, the Lords would slip defensively in the second quarter and went into the half down by seven.

In the second half, the Lords were able to cut the Algonquin lead to just two points, but big three-pointers from Amber Burton and Claire Abbott enabled the Thunder to pull away.

Offensively, the Lords were led by Kelsey Hare (Whitby, Ont.) who collected 17 points, nine rebounds and one assist after rediscovering her 2012 OCAA all-star form in the third quarter. The next leading scorers were Kauri LaFontaine (Whitby, Ont.) who collected seven points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal and Kayla Marshall (Ottawa, Ont.) who netted seven points, three rebounds and four steals.

Making her return to the Lords line-up, Alicia Del Fuoco (Whitby, Ont.) picked up two rebounds and two steals.

Algonquin improves to 2-0 to start the season while the Lords fall to 1-2. Durham will now travel to Belleville to faceoff with Loyalist (0-1) on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
