MOHAWK 79, CAMBRIAN 26

HAMILTON, Ont. - Mohawk swept Cambrian of Sudbury in OCAA men's and women's basketball Friday (Nov. 8) at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.

The Mountaineer women romped 79-26 to go to 3-1 on the season, while the Golden Shield fell to 0-5.

Careena Browne had 15 points, Katelyn Arbour had 12 and Natalie Fisher was one point away from a double-double with nine points and 13 rebounds.

"We were able to jump on them from the start with a 19 point lead after the first quarter, mainly due to our strong defence and excellent ball distribution on offence," said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy. "This game demonstrated how strong we can be when we share the ball with quick, crisp passes and move to the open spaces of the defence. I was pleased to see that everyone got on the score sheet and made solid contributions at the defensive end as well."

The Mohawk men completed the doubleheader sweep with a 108-59 decision. Once again, the Mountaineers improved to 3-1 while Cambrian fell to 0-5.

"We actually got off to a slow start the first three minutes and then we woke up and really pressured effectively," said Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker.

The Mountaineers led 42-17 at the end of the first quarter and 59-33 at the half.

Matt Fennell led the way for Mohawk with 22 points, five rebounds and five assists. Andrew Cicuttini had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor Dowhaniuk scored 12 points, added 10 rebounds and four blocked shots and Patrick Iavarone had 12 points, nine steals and five assists.

Mohawk and Cambrian meet again Saturday (Nov. 9). The women hit the Braley Centre court at 12 p.m., followed by the men at 2 p.m.
