FANSHAWE 54, MOHAWK 46

LONDON, Ont. - On Friday Night, the Fanshawe women's basketball team (7-2) defeated by the Mohawk Mountaineers (4-4) by a final score of 54-46. Fanshawe currently sits in third place in the OCAA West Division standings.

The Falcons full court pressure caused two quick turnovers to start the game for the Mountaineers and led to an early 4-0 lead for Fanshawe. Mohawk struggled from the free throw line which turned out to be the difference as the Falcons took a four-point lead into the second quarter 15-11.

Mohawk started the second quarter on a 7-0 run, in large part to the play of Mohawk's Lacey Wolters and Shamira Kerlew, who used their size to take advantage inside the paint. With four minutes left in the half, Fanshawe scored their first points of the quarter, tying the game at 18.  After a Mohawk turnover, Fanshawe's Kim Metcalf drove the baseline and scored the bucket plus the foul, giving the Falcons the lead once again. The Falcons took a 25-22 lead into the half.

The Falcons were aggressive to start the third quarter. Back-to-back baskets by Fanshawe's Anique Dailey pushed the lead to seven for the Falcons, forcing Mohawk to take a timeout. The Mountaineers stormed back and were within two before Fanshawe's Ali Vlasman made two consecutive baskets and pushed the lead back six.

Mohawk made a push themselves but the Falcons remained in the lead 40-36 with one quarter to play. Both teams picked up their defence in the fourth quarter, and after five minutes of play only two points had been scored.

Fanshawe's Kiera Serodio pushed the Falcons lead to eight with four minutes left to play after knocking down a pair of free throws. With 1:30 to play, Mohawk made it a one possession game but Fanshawe held on and eventually won the game 54-46.

Fanshawe's Larissa McBean finished the game with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Vlasman pitched in another 10 points for the Falcons. Mohawk's Katelyn Arbour led the Mountaineers with 12 points.

The Falcons next home game is not until Wednesday, Jan. 8 versus the Lambton Lions (3-6). The game takes place in the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre at 6 p.m. Fanshawe is 1-0 versus the Lions this season.

LONDON, Ont. - It was not a good night for Mohawk's basketball teams Friday (Nov. 29) as the Fanshawe Falcons won a pair of games.

The Mountaineer men saw their record fall to 6-2 dropping a 79-69 decision in London. OCAA men's basketball player of the week Andrew Cicuttini had 20 points and 22 rebounds. Taylor Dowhaniuk scored 13 points and added five boards. Chavaun Miller-Bennett and Chris Stanhope each had 17 points for Fanshawe, which improved to 6-3 and snapped Mohawk's five game win string.

"We played a very poor offensive game and were held to our lowest output of the season," said Mountaineers head coach Brian Jonker. "We need to regroup quickly to play the No. 1 team in the country, Sheridan, on Wednesday night (Dec. 4 at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre)."

Meanwhile, the Fanshawe women dispatched Mohawk 54-46. Katelyn Arbour scored 12 points and Ally DeLorenzi had nine for the Mountaineers, 4-4 and losers of three straight. For the Falcons, who upped their mark to 7-2 after their fifth win in a row, Larissa McBean scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds and Ali Vlasman added 10 points.

"It was a close game all the way through," said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy. "We just couldn't get any momentum going on offence and it cost us. Defensively, I thought we played well enough to win. It's a tough loss against a very fierce rival."

Mohawk meets Sheridan at the Braley Centre Wednesday (Dec. 4).
