CENTENNIAL 93, GEORGIAN 46

SCARBOROUGH, Ont. – The Georgian Grizzlies men's and women's basketball teams travelled south to face the Centennial Colts in their final game of 2013 while marking the halfway point of their OCAA regular seasons.

The match was a big one for the men's team as the Colts were sitting one place ahead of the Grizzlies in the tight East Division standings going into the game.

The two evenly matched teams battled from start to finish in a game that featured 18 lead changes. After Georgian trailed by one point 38-37 at halftime the Grizzlies came up with a solid third quarter to reclaim the lead by five points heading to the fourth and final quarter.

Although the Colts were able to get close including a late flurry of baskets at the end, the Grizzlies never relinquished the lead holding on for a big 83-82 victory.

Justin Mitchell (Newmarket) led the Grizzlies in scoring with 19 points while first-year forward Teq Zwarych (Whitby) posted his fourth straight double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds.

First year guard Braeden Wilkenson (Ottawa) had a great game shooting nearly 60 percent of his three point attempts as part of a 14-point performance.

With the win, Georgian closes the first half with a 6-4 record and are tied for third spot in the OCAA East Division standings.

The women's team found themselves up for a big challenge against the second placed Colts and the Grizzlies couldn't find an answer.

Things started off badly for the Grizzlies and they couldn't dig themselves out of the hole falling 93-46 to the Colts.

Freshman Erial Barnard (Collingwood) led the Grizzlies with 10 points while Shelby Clark (Barrie) had nine points in the loss.

Both Grizzlies teams will return to action when they hit the road Jan. 10 and 11 for games at Durham and Fleming. The Grizzlies next home games will take place on Friday, Jan. 17 when they host the Seneca Sting.
