DURHAM 64, GEORGE BROWN 47

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's basketball team opened the new year by extending their current winning streak to six games after defeating the George Brown Huskies 64-47 Tuesday night at the CRWC.

The Lords led from the first quarter on and were able to pull away in the fourth quarter thanks to a string of quick passing plays and excellent execution at the basket. This included outrebounding George Brown 59-42.

Kauri LaFontaine (Whitby, Ont.) played a major role in the Lords success by dominating the paint and crashing the boards collecting 22 points and a season-high 17 rebounds. This included being a presence on the defensive glass which prevented George Brown from having many second chance opportunities.

The Lords also received excellent play from their bench as both Hellen Dumbuya (Whitby, Ont.) and Katelynn Shields (Courtice, Ont.) were able to raise the intensity on the floor and help maintain Durham's momentum throughout the game. Dumbuya finished with nine points and six rebounds while Shields added six points and six rebounds in the victory.

Kelsey Hare (Whitby, Ont.) also assisted in the victory with two big time blocks on the defensive end while adding 12 points. This gives the fifth year senior 1,052 career points, 15 points behind former teammate Erin Emery as Durham College's all-time leading scorer.

The Lords are in second place in the OCAA East region with a 7-2 record, a half-game ahead of the Centennial Colts and St. Lawrence Vikings. George Brown is in fifth place with a 4-5 record.

The Lords will next play host to Georgian College on Friday, Jan. 10 at the CRWC with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
