DURHAM 64, GEORGIAN 42

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's basketball team extended their current winning streak to seven games after defeating Georgian College 64-42 Friday night at the CRWC.

The Lords pulled away from the Grizzlies early and proceeded to maintain a healthy lead throughout. Durham's strong defensive play allowed them to pull away as the Lords had 25 points off turnovers throughout the four quarters.

For the second straight game, Kauri LaFontaine (Whitby, Ont.) showed an all-star form nearly earning a triple-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. LaFontaine was also key on defence as she was the Lords primary lane protector and collected 10 of her 11 rebounds on the defensive glass.

Kate Mowat (Whitby, Ont.) also shined in the Lords latest victory showcasing her ability to be a presence in the paint and from behind the arc. Mowat finished a very efficient offensive night with 19 points going 7-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-8 from three-point range.

The victory sets up a crucial match-up with the undefeated Algonquin Thunder who are currently ranked fifth in the country and lead the OCAA East region with an 8-0 record. The Lords will take their 8-2 record to the nation's capital in search of an upset on Jan. 17 with tip-off at 6 p.m.

OSHAWA, Ont. - One team had a tough start and one had a tough finish but in both cases it was trouble for the Georgian Grizzlies men's and women's basketball teams when they travelled to face the Durham Lords on Friday night in Oshawa.

The Grizzlies men's team put together a good road game but the Lords were able to hang around and then strike late against Georgian.

In a game that featured 13 lead changes the Grizzlies hoped to have the win leading by five points late in the fourth quarter but Durham staged a late rally and eventually take the lead.

Georgian responded by hitting a late two pointer to send the game to overtime with an 80-80 score.

In overtime both teams continued to battle but in the end Durham pulled ahead at the end to take the win 93-89.

Georgian's Justin Mitchell (Newmarket) had a season-high 33 points in the loss as the Grizzlies record fell to 6-5 on the season.

The Grizzlies women's team struggled out of the gate against the Lords and were unable to find their scoring touch as they fell 64-42.

Durham got out to a 19-8 lead in the first quarter and Georgian spent the rest of the game playing catch-up as they shot under 30 per cent for the game.

Katie Wiggins (Belleville) and Erial Barnard (Collingwood) each had a team-high nine points for the Grizzlies.

Both the Grizzlies men's and women's teams will continue their road trip when they face the Fleming Knights Saturday afternoon in Peterborough.
