ALGONQUIN 72, DURHAM 58

OTTAWA - Kelsey Hare became the Durham College women's basketball all-time scoring leader as she scored 14 points in a 72-58 loss to the No. 5-ranked Algonquin Thunder in Ottawa on Friday night.

Hare (Whitby, Ont.) has scored 1,072 career points, passing former teammate Erin Emery who finished her five-year career with 1,067 points. Emery set the Lords record in her final season (2011-12), passing Bonnie Slaughter.

The three-time provincial all-star now ranks third in OCAA all-time scoring, with Seneca's Natasha Thombs occupying the top spot with 1,178 career points. Durham women's basketball players have four of the Top 10 OCAA all-time leading scorers, the most of any college (Hare - 3rd, Emery - 4th, Slaughter - 7th and Julie Goedhuis - 8th).

After a slow start on Friday night with only six points scored over the first three quarters, Hare went on a scoring spree in the final 10 minutes draining eight points to break the record. Coming into the game, Hare was averaging 14.6 points per game this season.

Algonquin, who is undefeated in OCAA conference action this year with an 11-0 record, dominated from start to finish as they capitalized on a number of Lords' turnovers. Early in the second half, Durham's Kauri LaFontaine (Whitby, Ont.) and Kate Mowat (Whitby, Ont.) hit a couple of long range three-pointers to cut into the Thunder lead, but the green and gold could not make up the large deficit. Mowat finished the night with 17 points while LaFontaine had 15.

Katelynn Shields (Courtice, Ont.) and Hellen Dumbuya (Whitby, Ont.) provided a spark off the bench late in the game for Durham.

The loss puts an end to Durham's seven game conference winning streak as they fall to 8-3 during the regular season while the Thunder improve to 11-0. The Lords will head to Scarborough next week as they take on the Centennial Colts on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Centennial is a half game ahead of Durham with an 8-2 record, tied with the St. Lawrence Vikings for second place.

Algonquin is the three-time defending OCAA champions.
