ETOBICOKE, Ont. - It was a good news-bad news night at Humber College in Etobicoke Thursday (Jan. 16) as the Mohawk Mountaineers and Humber Hawks divided an OCAA basketball twin bill.

The ever improving Mohawk women stunned the hometown Hawks 67-39. For the 7-4 Mountaineers, it was a third consecutive victory and it was the first home defeat of the season for the Hawks, who slipped to 10-2.

Mohawk trailed 6-0 at the start, then went on a 22-0 run. The Mountaineer press was at its best and the winners scored 36 of their points off turnovers. Stef Hrymak led Mohawk with 19 points. Jen Abella had 10 points and her sister Rachelle Abella added nine. Natalie Hagopian scored nine points for Humber. Chioma Oriuwa added seven.

Mohawk men's coach Brian Jonker said his team was 53 seconds away from stealing a game they didn't deserve to win. But they couldn't pull it out. The Mountaineers struggled most of the night and bowed 76-72 at Humber. Mohawk's record dropped to 8-3, while Humber improved to 9-3.

The Hawks scored buzzer-beaters in each of the first three quarters, including a three-point bomb by Junior Davis from about 75 feet to end the first quarter.

Matt Fennell had 21 points for Mohawk. Andrew Cicuttini scored 18 and added 11 rebounds. Pat Iavarone had 13 points while Taylor Dowhaniuk scored eight points and added 11 boards. R.J. Ramirez scored 21 points for Humber. Greg Edelsward had 10 points and Chad Bewley scored nine.
