KNOX NEW ST. LAWRENCE ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER

KINGSTON, Ont. - After the St. Lawrence Vikings women's basketball team concluded their game against Algonquin College last week, Lacey Knox surpassed Rachel Niven as the all-time Vikings women's basketball points leader.

"I'm really honored to have this record," said the two-time Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) women's basketball player of the year.

In just two and a half seasons (40 games), Knox has recorded 772 total points, surpassing the previous record of 769 set by Niven who played for SLC from 2005-06 to 2008-09.

"I'm not that surprised that she has clinched the leading scoring title for SLC women's basketball," said SLC head coach Remy Simpson.

"Lacey works so hard year-round and it's nice to see it pay off for her. She is well deserving of this title, and I'm so proud of her," Simpson added.

What is even more impressive is that Lacey has managed to accomplish this feat (in addition to winning the OCAA scoring title, and OCAA women's basketball player of the year for the past two consecutive seasons) while studying full-time in the bachelor of applied arts degree in behavioural psychology program with a grade point average above 3.9, working part-time, and is still able to dedicate countless hours to the Vikings basketball program through practices, workouts, road trips and games.

"Being busy keeps me focused. I don't have any time to procrastinate, so what free time I do have is spent studying and doing homework," said Knox.

"Having played basketball for so long, I've learned to work around it by doing homework on road trips and at hotels. Playing varsity sports takes up a lot of time, so I don't have the luxury of down time, but that's the way I like it."

"I need to thank my teammates and coaches for all their support. I've been fortunate to have played with some amazing friends the past three years at SLC. My parents as well, they come to each game, including each year that we reached OCAAs. Without their support, I definitely wouldn't be able to keep such a busy schedule."

With 10 games remaining in the regular season, there is still plenty of time for Knox to continue to add to her point total, in what is her final year of OCAA eligibility, having played two years at Western University prior to coming to SLC.

The Vikings face the George Brown College Huskies on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. in their final home game prior to the winter break.
