EAST AND WEST SPLIT OCAA BASKETBALL ALL-STAR WEEKEND

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The 2017 OCAA Men's and Women's Basketball All-Star Games presented by belairdirect took place at Fleming College's Sutherland Campus as over 100 of the province's top intercollegiate student-athletes showcased their talents to a capacity crowd.

In the women's all-star game, it was the West that bested the East. Team West never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 19-15 lead after one quarter, then building a 38-32 advantage at halftime. Trailing 62-48 after three quarters, Team East attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter but Team West eventually put the game away 90-63.

Durham College's Dekota Kirby was named East MVP scoring seven points, while Jesseca Brown of Redeemer was named West MVP. Brown led all Team West players with 32 points, and the top scorer for Team East was Centennial's Yasmeen Smith.

In the men's game, Team East prevailed with a score of 96-79 over the West. Team East took an early lead in the first quarter 27-14, with Team West narrowing the gap 46-35 by halftime. The West continued to battle back in the third quarter 66-60 and attempting to rally in the fourth, but Team West eventually put the game away in the end.

Canadore's Tarez Hepburn was named East MVP scoring 21 points, while Paul Williams of Sheridan was named West MVP with seven points. Humber's Trevon Mollison led all Team West players with 16 points, and the top scorer for Team East was Hepburn with 21 points.

In the Women's Skills Competition, Alyssa McCabe of Niagara was named winner with an impressive 31.18 seconds. Scoring 18 points, Ceejay Nofuente of Humber claimed the Women's Three Point Challenge title.

In the Men's Three Point Challenge, Carlo Pantaleon of Loyalist tied Lequan Hylton of Niagara 14-14 with Hylton winning the tie-breaker 4-3. Fleming's Taylor Robinson came in third with 11 points. Gibson Eduful of Humber claimed the winning time in the Skills Competition with 23.56 seconds.

This was the third time Fleming College has hosted the OCAA basketball all-star games. In addition to the all-star games, the day-long event featured skills competitions, a "Shoot for Cash" competition, and a fan favourite mascot competition. A special appearance by Toronto Raptors game announcer Herbie Kuhn rounded out the special event.
