ST. LAWRENCE HOSTS OCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PROVINCIALS

KINGSTON, Ont. - The top eight teams are set to compete for provincial hardware at the 2019 belairdirect Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Basketball Championship. The event is being hosted by St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ont., from Thursday through Saturday.

The four-time defending OCAA and reigning national champion Humber Hawks return to the provincial stage looking to set a new standard for consecutive gold medals in women's basketball. Joining Humber (18-2) is last year's silver medalist Fanshawe Falcons, this year's West Division champion and winners of 16 straight games.

A total of five teams from the West Division will compete at provincials. In addition to Humber and Fanshawe (19-1), Sheridan (15-5), St. Clair (12-8) and Niagara (11-9) will make the trek across the 401 to the Limestone City.

East Division champion Algonquin (15-2), who share the record with Humber with four straight championships from 2011 to 2014, will be joined at provincials by fellow division rivals Durham (12-5) and host St. Lawrence (6-11).

A total of 11 games will be played in a span of three days. The OCAA quarter-finals will take place on Thursday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. Winning teams will advance to the OCAA semi-finals on Friday, followed by the bronze and gold medal games on Saturday.

While each team is guaranteed at least two games, they must win their quarter-final match to remain in OCAA medal contention. Losing teams in the quarter-finals will compete in the consolation round Friday, with the final taking place Saturday.

The OCAA champion and silver medalist advances to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Basketball National Championship, taking place in Sainte-Foy, Que., next month.

Here's a closer look at the quarter-final match-ups.
