FANSHAWE TO HOST CCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

FANSHAWE TO HOST CCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Fanshawe Falcons will host the 2021 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Basketball National Championship.

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) institution will host the event for the first time in London, ON, from March 17-20, 2021. All games will take place at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre.

"We are excited to head to London, Ontario, for the CCAA Championship in 2021," said Mai-Anh Nguyen, CCAA Women's Basketball Convenor. "Fanshawe's athletics department is a great group of professionals and I am confident that they will host an exciting and excellent National Championship."

Fanshawe, one of Ontario's largest Colleges, recently presented the successful 2017 CCAA Men's Volleyball National Championship. The institution has also hosted CCAA Curling (2016), Men's & Women's Soccer (2004) and Badminton (1997).

The Falcons have a great reputation for hosting first-class championship events and providing an excellent student-athlete experience.

"As host, we will commit to providing an enjoyable, safe and rewarding competition that will create lasting memories for all student-athletes," said Peter Devlin, President of Fanshawe College.

The Women's Basketball program at Fanshawe has enjoyed recent success in the OCAA. The Falcons have medaled at provincials in each of the last four seasons, including gold in 2018-19.

The OCAA institution has a strong interest in developing and building the sport of basketball in London, according to Nathan McFadden, Manager of Athletics at Fanshawe.

"London is a basketball city with multiple nationally recognized club programs and the strongest franchise in the National Basketball League of Canada, the London Lightning," he said.

The Lightning are the perennial league leaders in attendance each season and owned by Fanshawe Men's Basketball alumni Vito Frijia, a two-time National Champion and CCAA Hall of Fame inductee (2016).

The 2020 CCAA Women's Basketball National Championship will be hosted by Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, BC, from March 18-21.
