LOYALIST WITHDRAWS FROM OCAA WOMEN'S RUGBY

LOYALIST WITHDRAWS FROM OCAA WOMEN'S RUGBY

BELLEVILLE, Ont. - In a statement released by athletics director Jim Buck Wednesday morning, it was announced that the Loyalist Lancers women's rugby program has withdrawn from OCAA competition.

Effective immediately, Loyalist College is withdrawing the women's rugby team from the OCAA. We feel this decision is in the best interests of our student-athletes from a Safety and Risk Management stand-point.

It is incumbent upon me, as Loyalist's Athletics Director, to make decisions that could affect the safety and well-being of our college's student-athletes. It is my duty to provide a safe environment, reduce the chance of injury, and reduce the risk of future injuries. As some of you may know, we have had a number of serious and season-ending injuries to members of our women's rugby team.

I have discussed this issue with several college officials and medical professionals. We all are in agreement that it is a sound and responsible decision. I believe it's our only course of action.

With these injuries to members of the team, we now have fewer players on a team with less than a full roster.

The Athletics Department would like to thank the players and coaching staff for their dedication and commitment to the Lancers, this decision is in no way a reflection of the players or the members of the coaching staff. We will be evaluating the future of the women's rugby program over the next few months and will keep you informed.

Thank you,

Jim Buck
Athletic Director
