HAMILTON, Ont. - The Mohawk women finished their first rugby sevens season losing four games in the tournament-style competition Saturday at Mohawk Sports Park and wound up 3-13 for the year.

In their opening game Saturday, the Mountaineers bowed 22-12 to the Sheridan Bruins. Brianna Timothy and Loramhel Mateo each had tries and Mateo kicked a convert.

In their second game the powerful Humber Hawks blanked Mohawk 43-0. Humber dominated the league losing only two of their 16 games.

The Mountaineers bounced back to play another competitive match, losing 21-10 to the Seneca Sting. Timothy and Michaela Van Sloun got the Mohawk tries.

And in their final game, the Mountaineers lost 20-10, despite two more tries from Timothy, on long runs down the middle of the field very late in the game. She proved to be a handful for her opponents scoring four tries for the day.

Mohawk coach head Alex Paris said the team relied on Timothy to do a lot of the hard work. "She is a hard tackler and runs hard, so we put a lot of pressure on her to excel throughout the season," said Paris.

The coach noted for the final day of competition the Mountaineers were minus their top two players and then picked up an injury, leaving a very short bench. But they never gave up. "They fought for the rest of the day," said Paris. "It speaks volumes for the girls and what we can expect next year."
