The women's quarter-final play-off rounds are set to take place
over the next two days with some of the best women's soccer players
in the province vying for a place in the final four.
With one game already in the books, the first game on the early
play-off docket was a barnburner as the Humber Hawks needed two
extra periods of play to narrowly defeat the Algonquin Thunder 1-0.
Keyla Moreno allowed the Hawks to breath a sigh of relief as she
scored on a penalty kick with seven minutes to go in second
overtime period.
Despite the loss, the Thunder did control the tempo of the game but
were out-chanced.
In the second match of the day, the Fanshawe Falcons will host the
Seneca Sting. The Falcons were the top team to come out of the West
Division sporting an 8-1-2 record and coming into their playoff
game off a handy 5-0 romp over the Conestoga Condors this past
week.
The Seneca Sting have been playing playoff soccer for a few games
now, as the tightly contested Central East Division came down to a
head to head match-up against the Durham Lords which the Sting
dropped 3-1 thus falling to second. But not willing to head into
the championship rounds with a loss, the Sting bounced back to
defeat the Cambrian Golden Shield 4-1 in preparation for the
opening round of the playoffs.
Tuesday's games will punch two more tickets to the OCAA
Championship final four as the powerful Durham Lords, who broke two
records in their 5-0 regular season finale win over Cambrian
College in Sudbury last week, will take on the Conestoga Condors in
Oshawa.
The Lords narrowly edged out the Seneca Sting for top spot in the
Central East Division, while the Condors finished second in the
West division with a 4-4-3 record. The Condors will need to tame
the high powered offense of the Lords if they hope to upset, but
with the weather potentially a factor in Oshawa, anything can
happen.
It was also a record breaking week for Katie Watts who netted a hat
trick in the season finale, bringing her total to 38 career goals,
passing former teammate Brittany Micucci for the Durham College
all-time scoring record. Watts moves into second position in the
OCAA all-time leading scoring race, led by OCAA Hall of Famer
Joanna Vitale of Humber College, who scored 56 goals in four years
with the Hawks. Watts scored 18 goals this season, winning the
league scoring championship averaging 1.64 goals per game. This is
the second straight year Watts has won the scoring title.
The Lords also broke the all-time single season scoring record with
59 goals scored this season. The Lords surpassed the 2003 Durham
College women's soccer team, who netted a record breaking 54 goals
enroute to an OCAA gold medal run.
Last and certainly not least, they are simply known as the new kids
on the block. The Fleming Knights won the East Division, ousting
the traditional power house Algonquin Thunder and in the process
have earned the right to host their first women's soccer
championship game Tuesday in Peterborough. They will take on the
Sheridan Bruins, a team that finished second behind the Humber
Hawks with a 5-4-3 record. Sheridan comes into the game after their
final week saw the ladies defeat the Mohawk Mountaineers 2-0 and
then drop a close game to Humber 1-0.
Fleming needed their final game to clinch their Divisional title,
but also had a fine week, rebounding well after losing to Algonquin
2-0 to down the La Cite Coyotes 4-1.
Each of the winners will advance to the belairdirect OCAA Men's and
Women's Soccer Championships hosted by the OCAA at the Ontario
Soccer Centre in Vaughan from October 22-24, 2009. League
All-stars, Player's of the Year and All-Canadians will be announced
at the Championship Banquet hosted at the Holiday Inn Express
Toronto Airport East on Thursday.
