FANSHAWE IN POSITION TO DEFEND TITLE

LONDON, Ont. - The defending OCAA women’s soccer champion Fanshawe Falcons have advanced to the semifinals following a 3-0 quarter-final victory over Durham College at home on Saturday.

Second-year forward Victoria Morrelly (Newmarket, Ont.) scored a pair of goals for the Falcons, while second-year teammate Lia Barkauskas (London, Ont.) added a single tally.

Fanshawe (6-0-2, 1-0 playoffs) keeps its unbeaten streak alive with the win.

The loss puts an end to Durham’s 13-year OCAA final four appearance streak.

Fanshawe will take on undefeated Algonquin College in an OCAA semifinal, to take place this Friday at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughn, Ont.

Algonquin 3, Mohawk 2

At Algonquin College, the host Thunder gave up two goals for the first time all season, but scored just enough for a 3-2 quarter-final victory over Mohawk College on Saturday.

Second-year defender Chelsea McLean (Ottawa), first-year forward Kayla Marshall (Ottawa) and second-year player Jaymie Baldree (Kingston, Ont.) all scored to build a 3-0 lead for Algonquin. For Marshall, it was her eighth goal of the season.

Third-year forward Andrea Urquhart (Hamilton, Ont.) and first-year midfielder Ashley Hagen (Ancaster, Ont.) responded for Mohawk to make it close, but it wasn’t enough for the visiting Mountaineers. Hagen scored a total of three goals in two post-season games.

Algonquin (8-0-0, 1-0 playoffs) will take on defending OCAA champion Fanshawe in a semifinal game this Friday at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughn, Ont.

Humber 4, Cambrian 0

At Humber, the host Hawks blanked the upstart Cambrian Golden Shield 4-0 on Saturday to advance to the OCAA semifinals.

Humber benefited from four different scorers, including fourth-year midfielder Bianca Barbieri (Toronto), fifth-year forward Connie Tamburello (Toronto), fifth-year midfielder Joanna Alexopulos (Mississauga, Ont.) and third-year forward Keyla Moreno (Toronto). It was Tamburello’s seventh goal of the season.

Humber (7-0-1, 1-0 playoffs) will take on Seneca College in an OCAA semifinal game this Friday at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughn, Ont.

Seneca 1, Conestoga 0

At Seneca, penalty kicks were needed to decide a 1-0 quarter-final victory for the host Sting over the visiting Conestoga Condors on Saturday.

For Seneca, it was its fifth shutout of the 2010 season, and fourth 1-0 victory.

Seneca (6-2-0, 1-0 playoffs) will face Humber in an OCAA semifinal game this Friday at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughn, Ont.
