VAUGHAN, Ont. - Algonquin College is the 2010 Ontario Colleges
Athletic Association (OCAA) women’s soccer bronze medalists
after a 3-0 win over Seneca College on Saturday at the Ontario
Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont.
First-year forward Kayla Marshall (Ottawa) provided all the offence
for Algonquin, scoring a natural hat trick.
The victorious Thunder went on the offensive from the opening
kickoff, spending most of the first half in the Seneca zone.
At the seven minute mark, Marshall took a crossing feed from
teammate Sydney Midwood (Kingston, Ont.) and knocked it behind
Seneca goalkeeper Katerina Conde (Toronto) to give Algonquin the
early 1-0 lead.
Marshall struck again in the 37th minute, booting home a rebound to
give Algonquin a 2-0 lead at halftime.
It was much the same in the second half, with Algonquin controlling
the majority of the ball possession. In the 60th minute, Marshall
was given a feed and sent in all alone on goal, securing her hat
trick.
Marshall almost scored a fourth goal minutes later in similar
fashion, but was stopped by Conde.
Marshall and Seneca defender Olivia Ferreira (Mt. Albert, Ont.)
were named player of the game for their respective teams.
This is the 12th OCAA medal in women’s soccer for Algonquin,
and first since 2008 when the Thunder struck silver.
Algonquin finishes the OCAA season with an overall record of 10-1
while Seneca drops to 7-4.
